The cytoplasm surrounds the |nucleus| of the ovum, the female sex cell. It is a watery substance which gives the cell bulk and provides the medium in which chemical exchanges takes place. The cytoplasm is composed of many dissolved substances and chemical particles. It is surrounded by the cell membrane, which holds in the cell contents and contains many pores to filter materials passing in and out.
